Position Summary

The Aircraft Pilot is responsible for operating state-owned fixed-wing aircraft in support of law enforcement, search and rescue (SAR), and public safety missions throughout Alaska. This position conducts safe and efficient flight operations while supporting the Department of Public Safety’s mission to protect life, property, and natural resources.

Schedule
• Full-Time
• Alternate work schedules, including 8 days on / 6 days off, may be assigned
• Travel throughout Alaska as required

Responsibilities
• Operate state-owned single-engine fixed-wing aircraft in support of law enforcement, search and rescue, and public safety missions
• Conduct flight operations in accordance with FAA regulations and department procedures
• Provide flight instruction when assigned as an instructor pilot
• Perform post-maintenance functional flight checks and coordinate findings with maintenance personnel
• Assist with repositioning aircraft between operational bases and maintenance facilities
• Evaluate weather, terrain, aircraft performance, and mission requirements to make safe go/no-go decisions
• Utilize electronic flight planning tools to obtain weather briefings, file flight plans, and complete flight risk assessments
• Support departmental aviation operations while maintaining the highest standards of flight safety

Requirements
• FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate or FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate with Instrument Rating appropriate for the aircraft operated
• Current FAA Medical Certificate appropriate to the certificate held
• Minimum 1,500 hours total flight time
• Minimum 500 hours Pilot in Command (PIC) fixed-wing time
• Minimum 250 hours Alaska PIC time, including at least 100 hours logged within the previous 12 months
• Strong aeronautical decision-making and risk management skills
• Knowledge of aircraft maintenance procedures and post-maintenance flight checks
• Proficiency using electronic flight planning and weather briefing systems
• Ability to successfully complete a department flight check and aircraft-specific instructor approval

Preferred Qualifications
• 100 hours turboprop flight experience
• Previous instructor pilot experience
• Experience supporting law enforcement or public safety aviation operations
