Supporting a Fellow Pilot
December 6, 2025 A highlight for me was helping a fellow pilot prepare for his assessment with LOT Polish Airlines. I guided him through the likely assessment stages, discussed potential interview questions and helped him understand what to expect. I also spent time with him in the Boeing 737 simulator, helping him become familiar with the aircraft and the simulator environment. During the simulator session, I noticed that many of his mistakes were not due to a lack of technical ability, but rather because he was nervous and under pressure. Instead of simply focusing on correcting each mistake, I focused on helping him relax, build confidence and manage the stress of the situation. By slowing things down and talking him through each step, we were able to make his approaches much smoother and more controlled. Although the scheduled simulator session was complete, I chose to stay for an additional two hours to continue working with him. We focused on raw-data instrument approaches and landing in IMC conditions, while maintaining a calm and structured approach to the training. For me, this was a valuable experience in understanding how important it is to adapt the way you communicate and teach to the individual. Sometimes the best way to improve someone's performance is not to give them more information, but to help them become calm and confident enough to use the knowledge they already have.
