Position Summary

The Director of Aerospace Safety provides strategic leadership for all aerospace safety initiatives within the department. This position oversees the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System (SMS) and Safety Management Program (SMP), ensuring regulatory compliance while promoting a proactive culture of safety, risk management, and operational excellence across flight training and aerospace operations.

Responsibilities
• Lead and oversee the department’s Safety Management System (SMS) and Safety Management Program (SMP)
• Develop and implement safety policies, procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives
• Ensure compliance with FAA regulations and institutional safety requirements
• Chair safety councils for faculty, staff, flight instructors, and students
• Monitor safety performance through data collection, analysis, and reporting
• Evaluate safety performance indicators and recommend program improvements
• Promote a positive safety culture through education, communication, and engagement
• Collaborate with FAA representatives, airport authorities, flight operations personnel, and university leadership on safety initiatives
• Serve as the primary point of contact for aerospace safety matters

Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Safety, Aviation Management, Professional Pilot, Aviation Maintenance, or a related field
• Minimum two years of operational experience in the aerospace or aviation industry
• Minimum one year of experience managing or participating in aviation safety programs
• FAA Private Pilot Certificate
• Strong knowledge of FAA regulations and Safety Management Systems (SMS)

Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree with demonstrated FAA Safety Management Systems experience
• Five or more years of aerospace or aviation safety experience (for related degree fields)
• FAA Commercial, Multi-Engine, Instrument, CFI, or ATP Certificate
• Experience managing FAA safety programs and Safety Management Systems (SMS)
• Experience leading aviation safety training or workshops
• Experience as an Assistant Chief Instructor or Chief Instructor within an FAA Part 141 flight training program
• Experience managing flight training operations
• Certifications in aviation safety, accident investigation, human factors, or risk management
• FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P), Flight Dispatcher, or Air Traffic Controller Certificate
