Position Summary

The Rotary Wing Pilot serves as Pilot in Command supporting public safety aviation missions, including law enforcement, emergency evacuation, and search and rescue operations. The position conducts specialized helicopter operations in demanding environments while supporting the aviation needs of the Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies.

Schedule
• Must be available to work varying hours
• Weekends and holidays may be required
• Rotating shifts, callouts, and overtime may be required

Responsibilities
• Serve as Pilot in Command during public safety aviation missions
• Conduct surveillance, patrol, pursuit, search and rescue, aerial photography, and personnel transport operations
• Perform specialized maneuvers, including one-skid landings and external load/short-haul operations
• Conduct night and mountain flight operations
• Evaluate and prioritize requests for aviation support
• Prepare flight plans and evaluate weather conditions
• Conduct preflight and postflight aircraft inspections
• Inspect, test, and maintain aircraft and mission-related equipment
• Load passengers, baggage, and cargo as required
• Maintain required flight logs, records, and written reports
• Operate aircraft ground handling equipment
• Coordinate pilot training programs and maintain training records
• Train pilots on aviation procedures and safety practices
• Support aircraft, hangar, and aviation unit readiness

Requirements
• FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with Rotorcraft-Helicopter Rating
• FAA Instrument Helicopter Rating
• FAA Second Class Medical Certificate
• Minimum 2,000 hours Helicopter PIC
• Minimum 1,000 hours Turbine Helicopter
• Minimum 100 flight hours within the 24 months immediately preceding application
• High school diploma or GED
• Valid Arizona driver’s license
• Must be an Arizona resident by the starting date
• Must meet applicable FAA requirements and remain in good standing
• Ability to maintain required mental and physical readiness
• Ability to perform flight operations under highly stressful or emergency conditions
• Ability to work independently and prioritize flight missions
